Conan Exiles Dungeons, Trebuchets and More in the Works

The world of Conan Exiles is going to be expanding in a big way soon as creative director Joel Bylos has shared during this year’s GDC that Conan Exiles dungeons and siege mechanics are currently in development, along with a host of other upcoming features.

A new video shows the upcoming trebuchet weapon in action, which was hinted at in an official blog post in January. The process of using a trebuchet is an involved matter, with aiming, preparing, and loading the weapon requiring direct interaction. Firing the weapon also requires a bit of guesswork, as loading in the right amount of stones will change the trebuchet’s trajectory.

The trebuchet will not only allow boulders to be fired but corpses as well. According to Bylos, the addition of a new Corpse Locker item will allow players to store dead bodies in a pit to rot, which can then be loaded into the trebuchet and fired over a city’s walls to spread disease. “They’ll explode as disease clouds in the enemy cities and spread pestilence and disease among your enemies,” he elaborated.

Dungeons are also coming to the game, the first of which can be accessed by a secret ritual. This underground sewer dungeon will feature puzzle elements and the requisite boss fight, as well as house several unique resources for players to harvest such as phosphorous, which allows the creation of torches that can work while underwater.

Other developments coming to the game include a dye system, the ability to more directly schedule Thrall activities, animal taming for mounting purposes, and the addition of necromancy. There will also be a new map set in a hinterland environment with green forests and snowy regions.

All of the named developments currently have no firm launch dates but are expected within the year. Additionally, plans are being made for Conan Exiles to officially release in the first quarter of 2018. More about what’s next can be read here, and a preview of the dungeon can be seen in the video below.

Our Thoughts

A lot of what’s being worked on sounds awesome, but we’re most intrigued by the plan to fully launch in 2018. Considering how other sandbox MMOs spend long spans of time in early access or seem to be in a state of perpetual development, this could mark the first time a sandbox MMO follows something resembling a schedule.
